Lakeside Shopping Centre to take part in nationwide ‘quiet hour’

Category: Shops 21

On Monday 2nd October Lakeside Shopping Centre will join 14 shopping centres in a nationwide ‘quiet hour’ in support of their autistic shoppers.

There are around 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK – that’s more than 1 in 100. People with spectrum disorder can find bright lights, loud music and pungent smalls too much of a sensory overload, with can lead to extreme anxiety.

Intu already provides training for every member of their staff:

intu Lakeside believes that every customer should have the opportunity to have an enjoyable experience at the centre whether this be shopping, socialising with friends, or watching the latest release at the cinema. However, for every 100 people in the UK one person has autism, which can make this experience a daunting and sometimes stressful occasion. In a bid to change this, intu Lakeside has worked with Treetops School and NAS Thurrock to ensure that the centre is welcoming and accessible for all to give them a memorable experience.

Intu will dim lighting and turn down music in shops and restaurants across its centres for 60 minutes on 2 October.
