Man jailed for five years for assault in Hornchurch bar

Alwyn Dowman, 39 (19.04.1976) of Sunrise Avenue, Hornchurch was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Wood Green Crown Court on Tuesday, 7 July after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm on the same day.


At 01:50hrs on Sunday, 1 February police were called to Appleton Way, Hornchurch following reports of a disturbance involving a group of men and women.

Officers spoke to the group and ascertained that a man had been assaulted with a broken bottle in the Vertigo Lounge bar, Station Lane, Hornchurch.

Officers attended the Vertigo Lounge and found a 29-year-old man suffering from a cut to the left side of his face. He was taken to hospital and received stitches to the wound.

Dowman was identified from CCTV footage and was arrested at 02:18hrs on 2 February on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

Detective Inspector Denise Johnson, from Havering CID, said: “This was a violent incident in which the victim suffered a serious facial injury. The length of the sentence reflects the gravity of the offence and I can only hope this will deter others from committing violent acts on the borough.”
