Historical Carter’s Bakers sign to be painted over?

Herbert William Carter and Son’s bakery in Ardleigh Green will be remembered by many, dating back from the 1920s. On the flank wall a large sign advertised their name, which when removed a few years ago revealed this older signage.

Although this might be seen as an eyesore nowadays, it is sad to see this little bit of history now painted over.

At least we can console ourselves that the present occupants, ‘Godfreys of Hornchurch’, have done a wonderful job on preserving the original character of this building.
