Tom Stobbart, The Brewery Romford Centre Manager has taken part in supporting The Challenge NCS scheme for Havering throughout the Summer. The centre was approached early in the year to partake in ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitches where the young people participating in the Summer National Citizen Service got a chance to showcase their ideas for a real life charity event to a panel of professionals. The centre embraced this chance to help and support the 15-17 year olds on participating in this important scheme which is intrinsic to building young people’s skills for work and life.

The centre manager participated in two cohort professional panels steering the groups on ideas for charity fundraising events. Not only did The Brewery participate but they also allowed the groups the space on site to bring their plans to life. The groups put on two fundraising days of performances, face painting and engaged with customers about their chosen charities: The Amy Winehouse Foundation in partnership with HAVCO and London City Mission. Both are causes at the heart of Havering and The Brewery has gone on to include the two in a community rewards scheme which will see one charity chosen by shoppers to receive £2,000 towards their work. As well as these events Tom Stobbart and his on-site management team invited the young people in to visit the centre and delve into what career paths are available in the sector.

Tom Stobbart, Centre Manager comments “It was a pleasure to take part in such a moving programme that makes a real difference to the young people of this area. To witness and influence the growth of confidence and life skills of these young people was an experience I am proud to have been a part of. The Brewery and I will continue to support the scheme and help in any way we can”.

The Challenge Havering Group Leader, Hannah Kinghorn added “The support The Brewery and Tom personally has given has made a real difference to the participants. He challenged their ideas and pushed them to think outside of their comfort zones which has been extremely beneficial to their progress with us over the summer. The on-site events were a great success and the marketing support The Brewery gave really helped to get the groups the attention they needed”.
