Havering Council released an email stating the source of the mystery smell:

Havering Council believes that the source of a mystery smell which has affected areas of the borough, in particular Hornchurch and Upminster, has been found.

It is thought that the smell came from rubbish being burnt behind a property on Upminster Road, which has been visited by the Police and London Fire Brigade on a number of occasions over the last few weeks.

Inspections by Havering Council confirm that burning has been taking place, and it appears that the site is now clear of rubbish and the burning is not likely to happen again.

While the source of the fire has been found, the culprits have not yet been identified. Should anyone see anything suspicious, they should report it by calling 01708 432563. It would be helpful to have descriptions of the people involved and any number plates of vehicles dropping rubbish off.

Councillor Osman Dervish, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said:

“This was a worrying case which upset many of our local residents, and I want to thank them for reporting this to us so that we could put an end to this nuisance.

“I would urge anyone with any further information to come forward so that the culprits can be caught.”

Havering is within a Smoke Control Area.  This means that a person cannot emit smoke from a chimney unless you are burning an authorised fuel or using exempt appliances eg burners or stoves.
