Until last year their were two Beaver Colonies [Bell Chamber and Gridiron] at St Laurence Church in Upminster. Unfortunately, the decision was reluctantly made to close the Bell Chamber Colony as their were not enough Leaders to run the weekly programmes. However, it was always planned to be only a temporary closure and the time has come for a try to reopen it.

The group is looking to re-start the Bell Chamber Colony hopefully in the late Spring, on a Thursday evening from 6:00pm – 7.15pm in the Hurford Hall at St Laurence [Hurford Hall is one of the two halls by the car park]

However, this will only be successful if the group gets new Leaders. Some members of the current Leader team may be able to help in the short term, but ultimately they need to find parents and carers who are willing to help out on a permanent basis. If this cannot be done, they will be unable to reopen the Colony.

If you or anyone you know is able to help, please direct them to Stephen Penfold (contact details below) or one of the Section Leaders who can advise them about the support and training they would receive. If the group gets sufficient expressions of interest, they would be able to apply to the Scout Association Development Team for assistance. Upon agreement from the Scout Association, the Development Team would then be able to help them start up the Colony.

The group already has children on the waiting list but if any of you have any friends who are looking for a Beaver place [age 6 – 8 years old], then please ask them to apply via the 2nd Upminster Scout website http://2ndupminsterscouts.org.uk/contact.html and fill in the joining form. Names can then be added to the waiting list.

It may also be possible for existing members to switch from the Gridiron Colony to the Bell Chamber Colony if you would like, and numbers permit – perhaps if your child has a friend who would like to be a Beaver they could attend the same Colony!

2nd Upminster has grown again this year: we are the third largest group in the District with over 100 members. Please help us to grow again in 2018. Any assistance, however large or small, will be very much appreciated!
