The good news story this week is about the ‘Benefit Cap’ and how the negative effects turned into a positive outcome!
In 2013 the Government brought into place Welfare Reforms. As part of the Government’s Welfare Reform Act 2013 the total amount of benefit that can be received was capped for both single people and couples. As a result a customer who had been claiming Jobseekers Allowance since March 2011 was affected.
The customer was resident of Havering with a partner and 4 children under 11 years of age when his family was affected by the Welfare Reforms, and experienced a reduction of £58.00 per week.
During this time he had been assigned to the Work Programme and was attending Jobcentre Plus weekly to receive additional support.
He was referred to the Tesco Distribution Centre Information Sessions in May 2013. Sessions were allocated to Careers Development Group (CDG) and the customer was offered support with his application by both Jobcentre Plus and Work Programme as part of a collaborative process.
He attended the Tesco Recruitment Road Show at Romford Library in April. He was supported with his online application by CDG and Romford Library as part of joint working. The Customer also completed the Benefit Cap Provision and received additional support from Havering Adult College with Psychometric Testing to pass the first hurdle of the application process.
In June 2013 the customer secured employment at The Tesco Distribution Centre and left benefit along with 326 customers from Barking, Dagenham and Havering.
The customer is now earning over £19,000 a year, in local work with minimal travel to work costs. His family and he are now no longer impacted by Welfare Reform and are receiving Working Tax Credits and will continue to receive Housing Benefit
