Brookside Infant School was given a boost this week as they found out they have been chosen to receive £1,346 in funding from the London Green Points – Havering Local Schools’ Fund to spend on a waste minimisation scheme.  London Green Points – Havering is a scheme designed to reward residents in the borough for wasting less.

London Green Points – Havering, which has been running since January 2014, is free for all Havering residents to participate in. Residents earn Green Points for their waste minimisation and recycling efforts, which can then be spent in an eShop on a range of sustainable products including Marks & Spencer vouchers and National Garden Gift vouchers, or donated to local charity and community projects. This year, the Local Schools’ Fund stands at £1,346, which has been raised by donations from residents and waste contractor Serco.

Steve Moore, interim Head of StreetCare at Havering Council presented a cheque of £1,346 to parents, pupils and teachers at Brookside Infant School on Tuesday (19 April). Mrs Angela Winch, head teacher at the school said, “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this extra funding. As a school we are committed to educating children about the environment and caring for the world around them, and we plan to use the fund to improve our food growing space where pupils learn to plant, harvest, prepare and cook their own food. Thank you also to the support of local business, Key Landscapes, that provided materials for the project.”

Residents must be signed up to London Green Points – Havering to earn Green Points. Currently 25 per cent of households in Havering are signed up to the scheme, but all households in the Borough can sign up for free by visiting, emailing or calling  020 7326 5055 (Mon – Fri 9am-5:30pm).
