The Stick Man Trail in Weald Country Park

After the success of the Gruffalo trail in Thorndon Country Park, a new trail was placed in Weald Country Park themed around the Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler book, Stick Man.

All of the figures are scattered over Weald Country Park and unlike the Gruffalo trail it includes a lot of activities and play areas for you to search for and find using the map you can buy from the park’s shop.

I took my 3-year-old girl to the park and she absolutely loved it, hunting down each activity and playing on the playground

In an interview with The Brentwood Gazette Jo Phillips, Essex Country Park’s outdoor learning manager, explained the thoughts behind the new trail, comparing it to the Gruffalo trail:

“We have taken a completely different approach here,” she said. “With the Gruffalo the figures are on paths through the woods, but there are no maps or signage, as we wanted people to stumble across them, as the characters do in the story.

“The Stick Man trail is much more about physical activity.

“These are structures for children and adults to climb on, sit on and interact with. They’re dotted round the park but there are no set paths to reach them.

“They have been carefully placed so they do not interrupt the stunning views in the park. When you arrive at the main car park you can clearly see the first play area but the others you have to go and search for.”

Although I would highly recommend the trail, there are a few blights on this otherwise fantastic children’s activity; For a trail that has only been open since October 24th, 2015 there were a lot of huge muddy patches that were cornered off and one of the climbing frames was closed as it was deemed unsafe a week after it was opened
