For the 7th year running, the Legal Employer Enrichment Activity Day which took place on Wednesday 2 March, proved a huge success. This annual event offered current students an exciting insight into the legal world and showed them the extensive opportunities waiting for them once they qualify. The attendee numbers were the highest to date, with a recruitment agency and 11 law firms including Herbert Smith Freehills, Bird & Bird, Linklaters, Eversheds, Clifford Chance, Latham & Watkins, Shearman & Sterling, Stephenson Harwood, Watson Farley & Williams, Weil Gotshal & Manges, and Laytons.
Throughout the day, legal employers provided information about working in the legal sector and ran a series of practical workshops. These covered areas such as CV writing, interview formats and legal roles. However, the most motivating part of the day was hearing from qualified former Havering College students, three in particular who are now working for Herbert Smith Freehills, one of the world’s leading law firms.
Karen Ford completed her Legal Secretary GNVQ in 1997 and is now a Legal P.A Manager. She hoped that today would show just how many opportunities students have by studying at Havering College –
“Although I qualified a while back now, I still have a good relationship with Havering College. The legal course not only provided me with real office experience but prepared me for situations I would face in this line of work. I was taught all the skills I needed and left with the confidence to go out there and achieve my career goal. It actually only took me two months to find a full-time work. The only part of my course I haven’t had to use is shorthand”
Imogen Rayment-Smith completed her City and Guild level 2 Legal Secretaries qualification last year and is now an Administration Assistant for Herbert Smith Freehills –
“While on my course I was given work experience opportunities with local legal firms; this not only gave me hands-on experience, but was also the chance for me to gain contacts who I could later apply to work with. Since qualifying, I have managed to put all the skills I have learnt in to practice and although I have a lot more responsibility now, the foundations I started with prepared me for what this role would entail”.
Jade Hearn completed her CILEX Level 3 course in 2013. She joined the company as an Administration Assistant and has since been promoted to Junior Legal P.A –
“Having the opportunity to work alongside legal firms opened up so many doors. By proving, while in my studies that I was a confident capable person, I found that once qualified I had brilliant connections. Getting a job wasn’t difficult as I had already worked with these firms”.
Havering College really invests in its students. The college networks with several employers in order to connect its students with legal firms looking for a fresh intake of staff, thus providing them with the very best employment opportunities.
Maria Thompson, Principal of Havering College, was very impressed by the turn out –
“Being here today has shown everyone just how successful our Legal Secretaries courses are. I’d like to thank our former students and their employers for their contributions today. Their combined wealth of knowledge and experience has inspired our current generation of students and for that I’m extremely grateful. This has been an invaluable lesson in how theory can be so successfully converted into reality. Already the level of interest in next term’s courses has risen from last year and the intake is expected to reflect that accordingly”.
