Bob Carlton, who was artistic director at the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch for 17 years, died yesterday from cancer
Carlton is credited with saving the The Queen’s Theatre from closure stepped down as artistic director in September 2014 after directing a run of his self-penned musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet.
Carlton previously took up the position in 1997, when the theatre was in a time of financial difficulty.
When Carlton left the theatre in 2014, he said:
“I am so proud of everything we have achieved over the last 17 years – it has been a true team effort involving a lot of very dedicated and ingenious people, who have created quality theatre on shoestring budgets. I’m looking forward to new adventures but will always think fondly of the Queen’s. I hope it continues to be a place where our whole community comes to enjoy professional, affordable, truly fantastic theatre.”
