Following on from the theatre’s critically-acclaimed festive production of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol in December, the award-winning theatre team invite you to stop in and see the amazing new plant Audrey II as they present the hit cult musical comedy LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS this February.
Fuelled by Faust and fertiliser, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is a charming, kooky and hilarious 1950s musical sci-fi spoof.
In this gleefully gruesome musical, based on the 1960 Roger Corman cult classic, Seymour, a poor florist’s assistant, allows his craving for fame and fortune to seduce him into playing nursemaid to a man-eating plant. His attempts to satisfy the growing plant’s demand for more, more, more are accompanied by a great score of witty parodies of 60s music. Between bites, the carnivorous Audrey II, named after Seymour’s secret love, brings the house down singing rhythm and blues à la Otis Redding and James Brown.
The Broadway smash hit was turned into a motion picture in 1986 starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Green, and Steve Martin and the show’s music was written by Oscar winning composer Alan Menken who also wrote the scores for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas and Enchanted as well as writing the music for the stage musicals Sister Act and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Menken’s score is the style of rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown and includes several well-known tunes such as “Suddenly Seymour,” “Somewhere That’s Green” and the title song.
The production is directed and designed by the theatre’s Artistic Director, Jai Sepple. “Our Little Shop of Horrors will be a gory, scary, glitter and sequins treat for all the family. The theatre’s intimate auditorium will be sure to provide a brilliant arena for a musical spectacular this February, drawing the audience right into the middle of the classic cult story.”
The cast is led by talented local actors Sam Towler as Seymour and Libby Richardson as Audrey and they are joined by Steve Probert as Mr Mushnik, Chris Ribbing as Orin and Neesha Robinson, Koreen Samuel & Simone Elesha as The Urchins. The line-up is completed by a massively impressive Audrey II puppet who is sure to take centre stage and steal the show!
The creative team behind the production includes Bailey Barham (sound design), PJ Tomlinson (puppetry), Christopher Weeks (musical direction) and Harri Sepple (lighting design and choreography).
This high energy comedy of bloodthirsty plant life will leave the audience feeling just like Audrey II between victims – ravenous for more! An unstoppable hit not to be missed…
So feed your need for musical hilarity this February with this delicious gem, but whatever you do… DON’T FEED THE PLANTS!
