A special event to get more people learning to play musical instruments last weekend was a huge success.

Nearly 100 people attended the event, held at the Robert Beard Centre in Hornchurch on Saturday.

Learn to Play Day is the flagship event of the national Music For All charity, supported by the Music Industries Association and the Musicians’ Union.

The aim is to encourage more people to play musical instruments. Havering Music School joined forces with local music retailers; PMT from Romford, East Coast Wind and the Hornchurch drum store Sound Attak, to host the event, inviting people of all ages to try a short hands-on trial lessons on a range of musical instruments.

Councillor Melvin Wallace, Cabinet Member for Culture and Community engagement, said:

“It’s great that so many people went to the event to try out playing a musical instrument and I really hope that it has inspired people.”

The national initiative, in its fourth year, is a great way for people young and old to try an instrument or perhaps get back into playing.
