D’Ukes come to the Queen’s Theatre

Popular ukulele band D’Ukes are bringing their show to the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch on Sunday 24th September 
with the added bonus of a beginners ukulele workshop before their 7.30pm evening performance. The workshop is aimed at those players just starting out and will look at tuning, strumming and some basic chords and is free for evening ticket holders.

D’Ukes, which includes two Havering ukulele players, Martin Burdikin from Hornchurch and John Mattock from Romford have had a busy year including the band performing in Poland. At home the band have performed at a number of Essex/Suffolk theatres including the Colchester Arts Centre where the band also hosted its 8th Ukulele 

Festival ‘D’UkesFest’ and they also headlined the Acoustic Stage on the opening night of the Cambridge Rock Festival. 
Most recently D’Ukes performed on the Fairkytes Stage at this year’s Havering Show.

“Our approach is to reinterpret songs using only the ukulele with a hint of percussion and plenty of humour” said Martin who plays ukulele and is one of the singers in the band. “The music is an eclectic mix from artistes as diverse as Elbow, Disney, Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Oasis and Deep Purple. We find that our repertoire suits all tastes and ages and usually gets the audience singing, dancing and smiling!” Martin added.

In the last few years D’Ukes have become a highly sought after band with appearances on both BBC and local community radio as well as TV’s Big Brother and Come Dine With Me. Over the eight years they have been together they have performed at all types of events both home and abroad performing alongside some of the bigger names in the international ukulele world!

“We are always glad to play our local area and this will be our eighth successive year at the Queen’s” said John who plays bass ukulele in the band. “We are pleased to be able to offer the beginners workshop for budding players which will take place at 5.30pm on the day in the theatre bar” John added.
